How do I create an ISO within Mac OS X?

by Management on 16 August 2010

Are you ever in a position where you have two computers in two different locations, and you also have a single CD that you are using and you need it when you need it, on whichever computer you’re using, and Murphy is working with you to ensure that it’s not in the computer you’re using?

Well, I have run into this several times, most recently it’s been with a couple of CD’s that I’m using to study for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam (mine are from the excellent titles Project Management Professional Study Guide and Review Guide by Kim Heldman and Sybex publishing). Since I won’t be sharing the CDs, and I need to ensure that I have it available when I need it, my solution is to make an ISO copy of it (finding study time during lunch while at work is essential for me).

Since the license permits me to make a copy, I can use this solution. If this is something you want to do, check the license, and/or call the manufacturer of the software to see if you are permitted.

Screen Captures With Mac OS X

by Management on 14 July 2010

One of the things that puzzled me for a short while when I migrated to Mac OS X and my iMac was how to get a screen shot of some window or segment of a window like I used to do on that Microsoft operating system.  In that other OS, there was a screen dedicated to this purpose (i.e., “print screen”), and all you had to do was either hit the <Print Screen> key, or hit <ALT><Print Screen> for the window itself (or, if you are used to PrintKey2000, it was even easier).  So how to do this on the Mac?  Well actually, there are a number of ways. January 19, 2010

Are you new to Mac OS X? Want to uninstall an application? For many apps, it’s really just as simple as finding the application in question and dragging it to the trashcan on the dock bar. However, it may leave some extraneous .pref files, et cetera. One of the first apps you should install (until [...]

Merry Christmas! Happy Hannukah! Gifts from MacUpdate!

December 23, 2009

It definitely is the holiday season, in terms of the commercialism that has leeched itself to the Christmas season. Where’s ‘wget’ on Mac OS X?

November 5, 2009

The other day I was trying to view a flash video file on the web, but the darn thing was just too small!  For whatever reason, I was unable to right click a link (or command-click the link) and choose Save Target As…  What to do? Being a Linux guy (I used to hold a [...]

October 5, 2009

If you’re in need of Mac OS X software, now is the time to purchase.  I’ve used MacPromo.com before (the Spring sale) and received a boatload of software for just $50 (well, $49.95 officially), and it was well worth it (I received Parallels 4.0, Tech Tools Pro, NetBarrier, et cetera, et cetera). Now is your [...]

Snow Leopard

September 6, 2009

I just installed the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade. Only thing that I noticed is that my old Safari icon stayed on the dock, and it didn’t work– stated that I had to run the newer version. Easily fixed though– I just removed the old from the dock, went to the Applications folder, started the updated [...]
